Psalm 139

The All-Knowing, All-Seeing Compassionate God

For the director of music. A Psalm of David.

1Lord, You have searched me and known me,
and You know me.

2 You know when I sit down and when I stand up;
You understand my thoughts from afar. 3 You oversee my path and my lying down,
You are intimately knowledgeable of all my ways. 4 Before there is a word on my tongue,
you know it completely, O Lord. 5 You have hemmed me in, behind and before,
and set Your hand on me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is so lofty, I cannot attain to it.   7 Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
and settle in the farthest part of the sea, 10 even there Your hand will lead me,
and Your right hand will hold me fast.   11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me,
and the light become night around me” 12 even the darkness is not dark to You,
and the night shines like the day, for darkness and light are both alike to You.   13 For You formed my inward parts;
You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Marvellous are Your works,
and this I know very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from You,
when I was made in secret, and woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in Your book all the days ordained for me were written, when as yet not one of them had begun.   17 How precious are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them,
they would be more in number than the grains of sand. When I awake,
I am still with You.   19 If only You would slay the wicked, O God!
Away from me therefore, you bloodthirsty men. 20 They speak against You with wicked intent,
and Your enemies misuse Your name. 21 Do I not hate those who hate You, O Lord,
and do I not loathe those who rise up against You? 22 I hate them with perfect hatred;
I count them as my enemies.   23 Search me, O God and know my heart;
try me and know my thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
