elder,
To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
2 Dear friend, I pray that you prosper in every way and be in good health, even as your soul prospers. 3 It gave me great joy to have some brothers come and testify of your faithfulness to the truth, and how you continue to walk in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
5 Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers, even when some are strangers to you. 6 They have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God, 7 since it was for the sake of the Name that they went out, accepting no support from pagans. 8 Therefore we ought to support such men, so that we may become co-workers with the truth.
9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not receive us. 10 So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, slandering us with malicious words. And not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers, and forbids those who want to do so and expels them from the church.
11 Dear friends, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. Anyone who what is good is from God, but the one who does evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius is spoken well of by everyone, and from the truth itself. We also testify for him, and you know that our testimony is true.
13 I have many things to write to you, but I do not want to write to you with pen and ink; 14 Instead I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.
Peace to you. The friends here send you greetings. Greet the friends there by name.
