The Book of 1 Peter

1 Peter Chapter 1

Greeting

1
PETER,

an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,  2  who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father in sanctification by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and for the sprinkling of His blood:

May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

A Living Hope

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! For in His great mercy He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,  4  and into an inheritance that can never perish or spoil and that does not fade away, kept in heaven for you,  5  who are being protected by God’s power through faith, for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.  6  In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have to suffer grief in various trials,  7  so that the genuineness of your faithof greater worth than gold, which perishes though refined by firemay be proved genuine and result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed.  8  Although you have not seen Him, you love Him; and no you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy,  9  for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

10  Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to come to you searched and carefully investigated,  11  trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when He testified in advance to the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.  12  It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

A Call to Holy Living

13  Therefore prepare your minds for action, be serious and set your hope fully on the grace that is to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.  14  As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you had when you formerly lived in ignorance.  15  But just as He who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all you do;  16  for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy”.

17  Since you call on the Father, who judges each person’s work without partiality, conduct yourselves with reverent fear throughout the time of the temporary stay here.  18  For you know that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold,  19  but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.  20  He was chosen before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.  21  Through Him you have come to believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

22  Now that you have purified your souls by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another earnestly with a pure heart,  23  For you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.  24  For,

“All flesh is like grass,
and all its glory like the flower of the grass; the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25but the word of the Lord endures forever”.

And this is the word that was preached to you as the gospel.
