words of Amos, who was one of the shepherds of Tekoa—what he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam, son of Jehoash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
2 He said:
“The Lord roars from Zion
and raises His voice from Jerusalem;
the pastures of the shepherds mourn,
and the top of Carmel withers.”
3 This is what the Lord says:
“For three transgressions of Damascus, even four,
I will not turn back from wrath,
because they threshed Gilead
with iron sledges.
4 So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael,
that will consume the fortresses of Ben-hadad.
5 I will break down the gates of Damascus;
I will cut off the inhabitants
from the Valley of Aven,
and the one who holds the sceptre in Beth-eden.
The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir,”
says the Lord.
6 This is what the Lord says:
“For three transgressions of Gaza, even four,
I will not turn back from wrath,
because they took captive entire communities,
handing them over to Edom.
7 So I will send fire on the walls of Gaza
that will consume its fortresses.
8 I will cut off the inhabitants from Ashdod,
and the one who holds the sceptre in Ashkelon.
I will turn My hand against Ekron,
until the last of the Philistines perish,”
says the Lord God.
9 This is what the Lord says:
“For three transgressions of Tyre, even four,
I will not turn back from wrath,
because they handed over entire communities of exiles to Edom,
and did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
10 So I will send fire on the walls of Tyre,
that will consume its fortresses.”
11 This is what the Lord says:
“For three transgressions of Edom, even four,
I will not turn back from wrath,
because he pursued his brother with the sword,
and cast off all compassion;
his anger raged at them continually,
and he harboured his wrath incessantly.
12 So I will send fire on Teman,
that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah.”
13 This is what the Lord says:
“For three transgressions of Ammon, even four,
I will not turn back from wrath,
because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead
in order to enlarge their territory.
14 So I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah,
that will consume her fortresses,
amid war cries on the day of battle,
and amid violent winds on the day of storm.
15 Their king will go into exile,
he and his officials together,”
says the Lord.
