The Book of 2 Peter

2 Peter Chapter 1

Greeting

1
Simon Peter,

a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who have received a faith as precious as ours through the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.

2 May grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

Growth in the Faith

3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who has called us by His own glory and goodness.  4  Through these He has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may be partakers of the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desires.

5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness, goodness with knowledge,  6  knowledge with self-control, self-control with perseverance, perseverance with godliness,  7  godliness with brotherly kindness, and brotherly kindness with love.  8  For if these qualities are yours in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  9  But if anyone lacks these things, he is short-sighted and blind, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.

10  Therefore, my brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election certain, for if you do these things, you will never stumble.  11  For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.

Peter’s Approaching Death

12  So I will always remind you about these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth you now have.  13  I think it right, as long as I live in this bodily tent, to refresh your memory,  14  since I know that shortly I must lay down this tent, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.  15  And I will make every effort so that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.

Prophecy of Scripture

16  For we did not follow cleverly contrived stories when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.  17  For when He received honour and glory from God the Father, a voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is My beloved Son; with Him I am well pleased.”  18  And we heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.

19  So we have the prophetic message more strongly confirmed, and you would do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.  20  Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation,  21  because no prophecy ever came by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
