The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

1
THE

account of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the son of Abraham.

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac was the father of Jacob,
Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers,
3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar,
Perez was the father of Hezron,
Hezron was the father of Aram,
4 Aram was the father of Aminadab,
Aminadab was the father of Nahshon,
Nahashon was the father of Salmon,
5 Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab,
Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth,
Obed was the father of Jesse,
6 and Jesse was the father of King David.

David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah,
7 Solomon was the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam was the father of Abijah,
Abijah was the father of Asa,
8 Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram,
Jehoram was the father of Uzziah,
9 Uzziah was the father of Jotham,
Jotham was the father of Ahaz,
Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah,
10 Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh was the father of Amon,
Amon was the father of Josiah,
11 and Josiah was the father of Jeconiah and his brothers
at the time of the exile to Babylon.

12 After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father to Shealtiel,
Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel,
13 Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud,
Abiud was the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim was the father of Azor,
14 Azor was the father of Zadok,
Zadok was the father of Achim,
Achim was the father of Eliud,
15 Eliud was the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar was the father of Matthan,
Matthan was the father of Jacob,
16 Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary,
who gave birth to Jesus, who is called Christ.

17  So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon were fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Christ were fourteen generations.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18  The birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way: After His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph and before they were joined together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.  19  Then her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to divorce her quietly.

20  But as he considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child that is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  21  She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”

22  All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken through the prophet:

23 “Behold, the virgin will be with child and give birth to a son,
and they will name Him Immanuel,”
which is translated, “God is with us”.

24  When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him. He married Mary,  25  but did not have marital relations with her until she gave birth to a son. And he named Him Jesus.
