Ezekiel Chapter 32

A Lament for Pharaoh King of Egypt

1
IN

the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:  2  “Son of man, take up a lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say to him:

‘You consider yourself a lion among the nations,
but you are like a monster in the seas. You thrash about in your rivers,
churning up the waters with your feet, and fouling the rivers’.

3 “This is what the Lord God says:

‘I will cast My net over you
in an assembly of many peoples, and they will haul you up in My net. 4 Then I will throw you on the land
and fling you on the open fields. I will cause all the birds of the air to settle on you
and all the beasts of the earth to gorge themselves with you. 5 I will lay your flesh on the mountains,
and fill the valleys with your carcass. 6 I will drench the land with your flowing blood,
even up to the mountains, and the ravines will be filled with you.

7 ‘When I snuff you out,
I will cover the heavens and darken their stars. I will cover the sun with a cloud,
and the moon will not give her light. 8 All the shining lights in the heavens
I will make dark over you, and put darkness upon your land’, says the Lord God.

9 ‘I will trouble the hearts of many peoples,
when I bring about your destruction among the nations, in countries that you have not known. 10 I will make many peoples to be appalled at you,
and their kings will shudder with horror at you when I brandish My sword before them. On the day of your downfall,
each man will tremble every moment for his own life’.

11 “For this is what the Lord God says:

‘The sword of the king of Babylon
shall come against you. 12 I will cause your hordes to fall
by the swords of mighty warriors, all of them ruthless men from the nations. They will smash the pomp of Egypt,
and all her hordes will be destroyed. 13 I will destroy all her livestock
beside the abundant waters that will no longer be churned by the foot of man
or muddied by the hoof of beasts. 14 Then I will make her waters clear
and make her rivers flow like oil’, says the Lord God.

15 ‘When I make the land of Egypt desolate
and the countryside stripped of all that once filled it, when I strike down all who live there,
then they will know that I am the Lord.

16  ‘This is the lament that they will chant for her. The daughters of the nations will chant it; they will chant the lament for her, for Egypt and all her hordes’, says the Lord God.”

Godless Nations Consigned to Sheol

17  On the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:  18  “Son of man, wail over the hordes of Egypt, and consign them to the lowest parts of the nether regions below, both her and the daughters of mighty nations, with those who go down to the Pit:

19  ‘Whom do you surpass in beauty? Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised!’  20  They will fall among those slain by the sword. She is appointed to face the sword; drag her away with all her hordes.  21  The mighty leaders will speak of her and her helpers from the midst of Sheol, ‘They have come down, they lie with the uncircumcised, slain by the sword’.

22  “Assyria is there, with all her company; their graves are all around her, all of them slain, fallen by the sword.  23  Her graves are set in the depths of the Pit, and her company are all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword.

24  “Elam is there, with all her hordes around her grave; all of them are slain, fallen by the sword. They have gone down uncircumcised into the lowest parts of the nether regions below, who spread their terror in the land of the living. They bear their shame with those who go down to the Pit; they are placed among the slain.  25  A bed is made for her among the slain, with all her hordes. Her graves are all around her, all of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword, although their terror had spread in the land of the living. They bear their disgrace with those who go down to the Pit; they are laid among the slain.

26  “Meshech and Tubal are there, along with all their hordes; their graves are all around them. All of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword, for they spread their terror in the land of the living. 27 But they do not lie with the fallen warriors of old, who went down to the realm of Sheol with their weapons of wartheir swords placed under their heads and their shields resting on their bonesthough these warriors also had terrorized the land of the living.

28  “Yes, you will be broken and lie down among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword.

29  “Edom is there, her kings and all her princes, who, for all their might, are laid among those slain by the sword. They lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the Pit.

30  “All the princes of the north and all the Sidonians are there. They went down in shame with the slain, despite the terror that they caused by their might. They lie down uncircumcised with those slain by the sword, and bear their shame with those who go down to the Pit.

31  “Pharaoh will see them, and he will be comforted for all his hordesPharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, says the Lord God.  32  For I have spread My terror in the land of the living, so Pharaoh and all his hordes will be laid among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword, says the Lord God.”
