Ezekiel Chapter 26

A Proclamation Against Tyre

1
IN

the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:  2  “Son of man, because Tyre said of Jerusalem, ‘Aha! The gateway to the nations has been broken, it has been turned over to me. I will be filled, for she has been laid waste’,  3  therefore this is what the Lord God says: ‘Behold, I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring many nations up against you, just as the sea throws up its waves.  4  They will destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers; I will scrape away the soil from her and make her a bare rock.  5  She will become a place for spreading fishing nets in the midst of the sea, for I have spoken’, says the Lord God. ‘She will become plunder for the nations,  6  and her villages on the mainland will be slaughtered by the sword. Then they will know that I am the Lord’.

7“For this is what the Lord God says: ‘Behold, from the north I am going to bring against Tyre Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, a king of kings, with horses, with chariots, with horsemen, and a great army of many soldiers.  8  He will slaughter your villages on the mainland with the sword. He will set up siege works against you, build a ramp against you, and raise up a roof of shields against you.  9  He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and tear down your towers with his weapons.  10  His horses will be so many that their dust will cover you. Your walls will tremble at the noise of the horsemen, the wheels and the chariots when he enters your gates as men enter a city which has been breached.  11  He will trample all your streets with the hooves of his horses; he will slaughter your people with the sword, and your strong pillars will fall to the ground.  12  They will plunder your riches and loot your merchandise; they will break down your walls and destroy your fine houses, and they will dump your stones, your timber, and your soil into the water.  13  I will cause the noise of your songs to cease, and the sound of your lyres will be heard no more.  14  I will make you a bare rock, and you will be a place for spreading fishing nets. You will never be rebuilt, for I the Lord have spoken’, says the Lord God.

15  “This is what the Lord God says to Tyre: ‘Will not the coastlands tremble at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan and the slaughter takes place in the midst of you?  16  Then all the princes of the sea will step down from their thrones, lay aside their robes, and take off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; they will sit on the ground, trembling every moment, and be appalled at you.  17  Then they will take up a lamentation for you and say of you:

“How you have perished, O renowned city,
you who were populated by seafaring men! She was mighty on the seas,
and she and her inhabitants inflicted their terror
on all around. 18 Now the coastlands tremble
on the day of your fall; the islands in the sea
are dismayed at your passing.

19  “For this is what the Lord God says: ‘When I make you a desolate city, like cities that are no longer inhabited, and when I bring up the deep over you and its mighty waters cover you,  20  then I will bring you down with those who descend to the Pit, to the people of long ago. I will make you dwell in the lowest parts of the earth, in places desolate from ancient times, with those who go down to the Pit, so you will never again be inhabited or display your glory in the land of the living.  21  I will bring you to a terrible end, and you shall be no more. Though you will be sought, you will never be found again’, says the Lord God.”
