Ezekiel Chapter 28

A Prophecy Against the King of Tyre

1
THE

word of the Lord came to me:  2  “Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“Your heart is lifted up with pride,
and you say, ‘I am a god; I sit in the seat of a god
in the heart of the seas’. But you are a man and not a god,
though you think in your heart you are as wise as a god. 3 Behold, are you wiser than Daniel?
is there no secret that can be hidden from you? 4 With your wisdom and with your understanding
you have gained wealth for yourself, and brought gold and silver
into your treasuries. 5 By your great skill in trading
you have increased your wealth, but your heart has grown proud
because of your wealth.

6 ‘Therefore this is what the Lord God says:

“Because you think yourself wise in your own heart,
that you are as wise as a god, 7 behold, I will bring foreigners against you,
the most ruthless of nations. They will draw their swords
against the beauty of your wisdom, and they will defile your splendour. 8 They will bring you down to the Pit,
and you will die a violent death in the heart of the seas. 9 Will you then say, ‘I am a god’,
in the presence of those who kill you? For you will be but a man, and not a god,
in the hands of those who slay you. 10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised
by the hands of foreigners.

For I have spoken, says the Lord God’.”

A Lament for the Evil One

11  The word of the Lord came to me:  12  “Son of man, take up a lament for the king of Tyre and say to him:

‘This is what the Lord God says:

“You were the seal of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God;
every kind of precious stone adorned you: carnelian, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald. Your settings and mountings were crafted in gold;
they were prepared on the day you were created.

14 “You were the anointed covering cherub,
for I had ordained you so. You were on the holy mountain of God;
you walked among the fiery stones. 15 You were blameless in your ways
from the day you were created until iniquity was found in you.

16 “Through the abundance of your trading
you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I expelled you in disgrace from the mountain of God,
and I banished you, O covering cherub, from among the fiery stones. 17 Your heart became proud
because of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom
for the sake of your splendour. So I threw you down to the earth;
I made a spectacle of you before kings.

18 “You profaned your sanctuaries
by the multitude of your iniquities and your dishonest trading. So I brought fire out from your midst,
and it devoured you. I reduced you to ashes on the ground
in the sight of all who saw you. 19 All who knew you among the peoples
are appalled at you; you have become an object of horror,
and you will never exist again” ’.”

A Prophecy Against Sidon

20  The word of the Lord came to me:  21  “Son of man, set your face toward Sidon and prophesy against her,  22  and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“Behold, I am against you, O Sidon,
and I will be glorified within you. They will know that I am the Lord,
when I execute judgments against her and manifest My holiness within her. 23 I will send a pestilence against her
and bloodshed in her streets. The slain will fall within her,
and the sword will be against her on every side. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

24  “No longer will the house of Israel have neighbours who are prickling briers and painful thorns to them and treat them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

Future Blessing For God’s people, Israel

25  ‘This is what the Lord God says: “When I have gathered the house of Israel from the nations where they are scattered, I will manifest My holiness through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land that I gave to My servant Jacob.  26  They will live there in safety, build houses, and plant vineyards; they will live securely when I execute judgments on all their neighbours who treat them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God” ’.”
