Ezekiel Chapter 10

God’s Glory Departs from the Temple

1
THEN

I looked, and there above the expanse over the heads of the cherubim was something like sapphire stone, having the likeness of a throne in appearance.  2  The Lord spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, “Go in among the wheels beneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with coals of fire from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And he went in as I looked on.

3 Now the cherubim were standing on the south side of the temple when the man went in, and the cloud filled the inner court.  4  Then the glory of the Lord rose up from above the cherubim and moved to the threshold of the temple. The cloud filled the temple, and the court was filled with the radiance of the Lord’s glory.  5  The sound of the cherubim’s wings could be heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks.

6 Then the Lord commanded the man in linen, saying, “Take fire from inside the wheels, from among the cherubim.” So the man went in and stood beside a wheel.  7  Then a cherub reached out his hand to the fire that was among the cherubim. He took up some of the fire and put it into the hands of the man clothed in linen, who took it and went out.  8  The cherubim all had what was the likeness of the hands of a man under their wings.

9 I looked, and there were four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub, and the wheels gleamed liked beryl stone.  10  As for their appearance, all four had the same form; each was like a wheel inside a wheel.  11  When they moved, they would go in any of the four directions, without veering as they went. The cherubim went in whatever direction the head was facing, without veering as they went.  12  Their entire bodies, including their backs, their hands, and their wings, and the wheels that the four had, were full of eyes all around.  13  As for the wheels, they were called in my hearing, “the whirling wheels.”  14  Each of the cherubim had four faces: the first face was the face of a cherub, the second face was that of a man, the third was the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

15  The cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures I had seen by the Chebar River.  16  When the cherubim moved, the wheels moved beside them; and when the cherubim lifted their wings to rise from the earth, the wheels did not leave their side.  17  When the cherubim stood still, the wheels also stood still; and when the cherubim rose up, they also rose up with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in them.

18  Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stopped above the cherubim.  19  The cherubim lifted their wings and rose from the earth in my sight; the wheels were beside them as they went. They stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the House of the Lord, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them.

20  These were the living creatures that I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the Chebar River, and I recognized that they were cherubim.  21  Each one had four faces and each one had four wings, and the likeness of the hands of a man was under their wings.  22  Their faces looked like the same faces that I had seen by the Chebar River. Each one moved straight ahead.
