Revelation Chapter 9

The Fifth Trumpet

1
THEN

the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth. He was given the key to the shaft of the abyss.  2  He opened the shaft of the abyss, and smoke rose out of the shaft like smoke from a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the shaft.  3  Then out of the smoke locusts came down upon the earth, and they were given power like the power that scorpions have on the earth.  4  They were told not to damage the grass of the earth, or any green growth, or any tree, but only those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.  5  They were permitted to torture them for five months, but not to kill them. The agony they inflicted was like the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a man.  6  In those days people will seek death, and they will not find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them.

7 The appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. On their heads was something like crowns of gold, and their faces were like the faces of men.  8  They had hair like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lion’s teeth.  9  They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of many chariots with horses rushing into battle.  10  They had tails like scorpions, with stings in their tails, so that with their tails they had power to harm people for five months.  11  They had as their king the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is named Apollyon.

12  The first woe is passed. There are still two more woes to come after this.

The Sixth Trumpet

13  The sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns of the golden altar that is before God.  14  It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”  15  So the four angels, who were prepared for this hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind.  16  The number of the mounted troops was two hundred million; I heard their number.

17  This was how I saw the horses in my vision: the riders wore breastplates that were fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulphur yellow. The heads of the horses were like lion’s heads, and out of their mouths came fire and smoke and sulphur.  18  By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulphur that came out of their mouths.  19  For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads, and they inflict injury with them.

20  The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues, still did not repent of the works of their hands; they did not stop worshipping demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which can neither see, nor hear, nor walk.  21  And they did not repent of their murders, or their sorceries, or their sexual immorality, or of their thefts.
