Revelation Chapter 4

The Throne of God

1
AFTER

this I looked, and there in heaven was an open door. And the first voice that I heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”

2 Immediately I was in the Spirit, and there before me was set a throne in heaven. One was seated on the throne,  3  and He who was seated on the throne had the appearance of jasper and carnelian stone. A rainbow that resembled an emerald surrounded the throne.  4  Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones twenty-four elders were seated. They were dressed in white robes, with gold crowns on their heads.  5  From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder. Seven fiery torches were blazing before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.  6  Also before the throne there was something like a sea of glass, similar to crystal.

In the centre and around the throne were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes in front and in back.  7  The first living creature was like a lion; the second living creature was like a calf; the third living creature had the face of a man; and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle.  8  Each of the four living creatures had six wings, and they were covered with eyes all around and within. Day and night they never stop saying:

“Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,
who was, and is, and is to come.”

9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honour and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, and who lives forever and ever,  10  the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and worship Him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, and say:

11 “You are worthy, O Lord our God,
to receive glory and honour and power, for You created all things,
and by Your will they exist and were created.”
