that time the Lord said to me, ‘Chisel out two of tablets of stone like the first ones, and come up to Me on the mountain. Also make an ark of wood. 2 I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Then you are to put them in the ark’.
3 “So I made an ark from acacia wood, cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. 4 Then the Lord wrote on these tablets what He had written previously, the Ten Commandments, which He had proclaimed to you previously on the mountain, from out of the fire on the day of assembly. And the Lord gave them to me. 5 Then I turned and came back down the mountain, and put the tablets in the ark that I had made; and they have remained there, as the Lord commanded me.”
6 The Israelites travelled from the wells of Beeroth-ben-jaakan to Moserah. There Aaron died and was buried, and Eleazar his son ministered as priest in his place. 7 From there they journeyed to Gudgodah, and from Gudhodah to Jotbathah, a land with streams of water.
8 At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the Ark of the Testimony of the Lord, to stand before the Lord and minister to Him, and to bless in His name, as it is to this day. 9 That is why Levi does not have a portion or inheritance with his brothers; the Lord is his inheritance, as the Lord your God promised him.
10 “I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights like the first time, and the Lord listened to me this time also; and He was not willing to destroy you. 11 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Get up. Continue on your journey leading these people at the front, so that they may go in and possess the land that I swore to their fathers to give them’.
12“So now, O Israel,
what does the Lord your God require of you?
But to fear the Lord your God,
to walk in all His ways and to love Him,
to serve the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your soul,
13and to keep the commandments of the Lord your God
and His statutes,
which I command you today for your own good!
14 “The heavens and even the highest heavens belong to the Lord your God, as does the earth and everything in it. 15 Yet the Lord set His affections on your forefathers and loved them, and He chose their descendants after them—you yourselves, above all the peoples, as it is to this day. 16 So circumcise your hearts, and do not be stiff-necked any longer.
17 “For the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. 18 He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner, giving him food and clothing.
19 “So you also must love those who are foreigners, since you yourselves were also foreigners in the land of Egypt.
20 “You shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him. Hold fast to Him and take oaths in His name. 21 He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome wonders you have seen with your own eyes. 22 Your forefathers who went down to Egypt were seventy persons in all, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the heavens.”
