Deuteronomy Chapter 6

The Greatest Commandment

1
“THESE

are the commands, statutes, and ordinances the Lord your God has instructed me to teach you, so that you may follow them in the land that you are about to cross over the Jordan to enter and possess.  2  Do this so that you may fear the your God as long as you live by keeping all His statutes and commands I am giving you and your son and your son’s son, and so that you may all enjoy a long life.  3  Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey them so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you.

4 “Hear, O Israel:
The Lord our God, the Lord is One. 5 You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

6  “Keep these words I am commanding you today in your heart.  7  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  8  Bind them as a sign on your hand, and let them be as a symbol on your forehead.  9  Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Obedience to God

10  “When the Lord your God brings you into the land He promised on oath to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give youa land filled with large and beautiful cities that you did not build,  11  houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells that you did not dig, vineyards and olive groves that you did not plantthen when you have eaten as much as you want and are satisfied,  12  be careful that you do not forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

13  “Fear the Lord your God, serve Him, and take your oaths in His name.  14  Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you,  15  for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God. Otherwise, the anger of the Lord your God will burn against you, and He will destroy you from off the face of the earth.

16  “Do not test the Lord your God as you tested Him at Massah.  17  Be careful to diligently observe the commands of the Lord your God, and the decrees and statutes He has commanded you.  18  Do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, so that it may go well with you, and you may go in and possess the good land which the Lord swore on oath to give your forefathers,  19  by thrusting out all your enemies before you, as the Lord has said.

20  “In the future, when your son asks you, ‘What is the meaning of the decrees, statutes, and ordinances the Lord our God has commanded you?’  21  tell him: ‘We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.  22  Before our eyes the Lord inflicted great and awesome signs and wonders against Egypt, against Pharaoh, and against his whole household.  23  But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land that He swore on oath to give our forefathers.  24  The Lord commanded us to obey all these statutes and to fear the Lord our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as the situation remains to this day.  25  If we carefully observe all these commands before the Lord our God, as He has commanded us, then righteousness will be ours.”
