we turned and went up the road to Bashan, and Og king of Bashan came out against us with his whole army to meet us in battle at Edrei. 2 But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have handed him over to you, along with all his whole army and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon’.
“So the Lord our God also delivered into our hands Og king of Bashan and his whole army. We struck him down until there were no survivors remaining. 4 We captured all his cities at that time. There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them: the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5 All of these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a large number of unwalled rural villages. 6 We completely destroyed them, as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying the men, women, and children of every city. 7 But all the livestock and the spoil from the cities we took as plunder for ourselves.
“So at that time we took from these two kings of the Amorites the land across the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley as far as Mount Hermon, 9 The Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, while the Amorites call it Senir. 10 We captured all the cities of the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of Og’s kingdom in Bashan. 11 After this, only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. His bed was made of iron, and it is still at Rabbah of the Ammonites. Its length was nine cubits and its width four cubits, measured according to the common cubit.
“Of all the land that we took possession of at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and Gadites the territory from Aroer, by the Arnon Valley, and half the hill country of Gilead with its cities. 13 The rest of Gilead and also all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (The whole region of Argob, with all Bashan used to be known as the land of the Rephaim. 14 Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called Bashan after his own name, Havoth-jair, as it is to this day.)
“I gave Gilead to Machir. 16 To the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead as far as the Arnon Valley (with the middle of the valley being the border) and up to the Jabbok River, which is the border of the Ammonites. 17 The Jordan in the Arabah is the western border, from Chinnereth as far as the Sea of the Arabah, the Dead Sea, below the slopes of Pisgah on the east.
“I commanded you at that time: ‘The Lord your God has given you this land to take possession of it. But all your fighting men, armed for battle, must cross over ahead of your brothers the Israelites. 19 However, your wives, your children, and your livestock—I know you have many livestock—are to stay behind in the cities I have given you, 20 until the Lord gives rest to your brothers as He has to you, and they too have taken possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving them across the Jordan. After that, each of you may go back to his possession that I have given you’.
“I commanded Joshua at that time: ‘Your have seen with your own eyes all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms you are about to enter. 22 Do not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God Himself fights for you’.
“At that time I pleaded with the Lord:
‘O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can perform deeds and mighty acts like Yours? 25 Please let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, that fine hill country and Lebanon’.
“But the Lord was angry with me on account of you, and He would not listen to me. The Lord said to me, ‘That is enough! Do not speak to Me again about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Piscah and look to the west and to the north and to the south and to the east. Look at the land with your own eyes, since you are not going to cross over this Jordan. 28 But commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he will cross over at the head of this people and cause them to inherit this land that you will see’. 29 So we stayed in the valley near Beth-peor.”
