The Book of Isaiah

Isaiah Chapter 64

Israel’s Prayer of Penitence

1IF only You would rend
the heavens and come down,

that the mountains would tremble at Your presence 2 as when fire kindles brushwood,
and fire causes water to boil to make Your name known to Your adversaries,
and cause the nations to tremble at Your presence! 3 When you did awesome deeds we did not expect,
You came down, and the mountains trembled before You. 4 From ancient times no one has heard,
no ear has perceived , neither has any eye seen another God besides You,
who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him. 5 You meet with him who joyfully does what is right,
who remembers You in Your ways. But we have sinned,
and You were angry. If we continue in this way,
how then can we be saved?

6 We have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like filthy rags; we all wither like a leaf,
and our iniquities carry us away like the wind. 7 There is no one who calls on Your name,
or strives to take hold of You; for you have hidden Your face from us,
and consumed us because of our iniquities.

8 Yet, O Lord, You are our Father;
we are the clay, and You are our potter; we are all the work of Your hand. 9 Do not angry beyond measure, O Lord;
or remember our iniquities forever. Look upon us, we pray,
for we are all Your people! 10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness;
Zion has become a desert, Jerusalem a desolation. 11 Our holy and glorious temple, where our fathers praised You,
has been burned with fire, and all our treasured places lay in ruins. 12 After all this, will You restrain Yourself, O Lord?
Will You hold Your peace, and afflict us very severely?
