The Book of Isaiah

Isaiah Chapter 45

Cyrus, God’s Instrument

1
THIS

is what the Lord says to His anointed:

To Cyrus,
whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him,
and strip kings of their armour; to open doors before him,
and the gates will not be shut: 2 “I will go before you,
and will level the mountains; I will break in pieces the doors of bronze,
and cut through the iron bars. 3 I will give you the treasures of darkness,
and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that I, the Lord,
the God of Israel, call you by your name. 4I call you by your name
for the sake of Jacob My servant, and Israel My chosen. I summon you by name,
though you do not know Me. 5 I am the Lord, and there is no other;
there is no God besides Me. I will strengthen you,
though you do not know Me, 6so that all may know, from the rising of the sun
to the place of its setting that there is none besides Me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other. 7 I form the light and create darkness,
I bring success and create calamity; I, the Lord, do all these things.

8 “O heavens, shower from above,
and let the skies rain down righteousness. Let the earth open wide,
that salvation may sprout, and righteousness spring up with it also;
I, the Lord, have created it.

9 “Woe to him who quarrels with His Maker,
a mere potsherd among the potsherds of the earth! Does the clay say to the one who is forming it,
‘What are you making?’ Or does your handiwork say,
‘He has no hands?’ 10 Woe to him who says to his father,
‘What have you begotten?’ Or to his mother,
‘What are you giving birth to?’ ”

11 This is what the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, says:

“Do you ask Me what will happen to My sons?
Will you command Me about the work of My hands? 12 I have made the earth,
and created man on it. It was My hands that stretched out the heavens,
and I commanded all their hosts. 13 I will raise up Cyrus in My righteousness,
and I will make straight all his paths. He will rebuild My city,
and set My exiles free, yet not for a price or for a bribe,”
says the Lord of Hosts.

The Lord Alone is Saviour

14 This is what the Lord says:

“The products of Egypt and merchandise of Cush,
and the Sabeans, men of stature, will come over to you,
and they will by yours; they will follow you,
they will come over in chains; and they will bow down to you.
They will humbly entreat you, saying, ‘God is truly with you, and there is no other;
there is no other God’.”

15 Truly You are a God who hides Himself,
O God of Israel, the Saviour. 16 All the makers of idols will be put to shame,
they will all be disgraced and go in confusion together. 17 But Israel will be saved by the Lord
with an everlasting salvation; you will never be put to shame or disgraced
throughout all eternity.

18 For this is what the Lord says,

He who created the heavens
He who is God! He who formed and made the earth;
He established it though not to be empty,
but He formed it to be inhabited:

“I am the Lord,
and there is no other. 19 I have not spoken in secret,
from somewhere in a land of darkness; I did not say to the offspring of Jacob,
‘Seek Me in vain’. I, the Lord, speak the truth;
I declare what is right.

20 “Assemble together and come;
draw near, you fugitives of the nations. They have no knowledge ‐
those who carry around their idols of wood, and pray to a god that cannot save. 21 Speak up and present your case;
yes, let them take counsel together. Who predicted this long ago?
Who has foretold this from ancient times? Was it not I, the Lord?
There is no other God apart from Me, a righteous God and a Saviour;
there is no one besides Me.

22 “Turn to Me and be saved,
all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. 23 By Myself I have sworn;
for the word has gone forth from My mouth an utterance spoken in righteousness,
and it will not return: Every knee will bow down to Me,
every tongue will swear by Me. 24 They will say of Me:
‘Only in the Lord
have I righteousness and strength’. All who are incensed against Him
will come to Him and be put to shame. 25 But all the descendants of Israel will find justification,
and they will exult through the Lord!”
