Job Chapter 23

Job Proclaims God’s Righteous Judgments

1
THEN

Job answered:

2 “Even today my complaint is bitter;
His hand is heavy on me despite my groaning. 3 If only I knew where I might find Him,
that I might come to His throne! 4 I would present my case before Him,
and fill my mouth with arguments. 5 I would learn the words that He would answer me with,
and understand what He would say to me. 6 Would He oppose me with His great power?
No, He would certainly take notice of me. 7 There an upright man could reason with Him,
so I would be delivered forever from my Judge.

8 “If I go east, He is not there;
if I go west, I cannot find Him. 9 When He is at work in the north, I do not see Him;
when He turns to the south, I do not see Him. 10 But He knows the way that I take;
when He has finished testing me, I will come through as pure gold. 11 My foot has held fast to His steps;
I have kept to His way and not turned aside. 12 I have not departed from the commandments of His lips;
I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my daily food.

13 “But He stands alone, and who can change Him?
What His soul desires, that is what He does. 14 He will accomplish that which is decreed for me,
and many more such things that He has in mind. 15 Therefore I am dismayed in His presence;
when I think of all this, I am afraid of Him. 16 God has made my heart faint;
the Almighty has terrified me. 17 Yet I am not cut off by the darkness,
by the thick darkness that covers my face.”
