Stages in Israel’s Journey

THESE

are the stages in the journey of the Israelites when they went out of the land of Egypt by their military divisions under the leadership of Moses and Aaron.  2  At the Lord’s command, Moses wrote down the places they set out from. These are the stages of their journey listed by their starting points.

God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt with many terrible signs and wonders.

The Israelites set out from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month. On the day after the Passover they marched out triumphantly in the sight of all the Egyptians.  4  At that time the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn, whom the Lord had struck down among them. The Lord also brought down judgment against their gods.

The Israelites departed from Rameses and camped at Succoth.
They set out from Succoth and camped at Etham, which is on the edge of the wilderness.
They set out from Etham and turned back to Pi-hahiroth, which is opposite Baal-zephon, and they camped before Migdol.
They set out from Pi-hahiroth and passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness, and when they had journeyed three days in the Wilderness of Etham, they camped at Marah.
They set out from Marah and came to Elim. There were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there.

They set out from Haradah and camped at Makheloth.
They set out from Makheloth and camped at Tahath.
They set out from Tahath and camped at Terah.
They set out from Terah and camped at Mithkah.
They set out from Mithkah and camped at Hashmonah.
They set out from Hashmonah and camped at Moseroth.
They set out from Moseroth and camped at Bene-jaakan.
They set out from Bene-jaakan and camped at Hor-haggidgad.
They set out from Hor-haggidgad and camped at Jotbathah.
They set out from Jotbathah and camped at Abronah.
They set out from Abronah and camped at Ezion-geber.
They set out from Ezion-geber and camped at Kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin.
They set out from Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom.  38  Aaron the priest went up Mount Hor at the Lord’s command, and died there, on the first day of the fifth month in the fortieth year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt.  39  Aaron was a hundred and twenty-three years old when he died on Mount Hor.

At that time the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev in the land of Canaan, heard that the Israelites were coming.
They set out from Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah.
They set out from Zalmonah and camped at Punon.

Instructions for the Conquest of Canaan

On the plains of Moab by the Jordan, opposite Jericho, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,  51  “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you cross over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,  52  then you must drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their stone images, and destroy all their metal images, and demolish all their high places.  53  You shall take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given the land to you to possess.  54  You are to distribute the land by lot as an inheritance among your clans. To the larger clan you are to give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group give a smaller inheritance. Whatever falls to a man by lot, that will be his. You will receive an inheritance according to the tribes of your fathers.

‘But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those whom you allow to remain will become as barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will bring you trouble in the land where you live.  56  And then I will do to you what I planned to do to them’.”
