said to the leaders of the tribes of the the Israelites: “This is what the Lord has commanded: 2 If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself under an obligation, he must not break his word; he must do everything he has promised.
“When a young woman still living in her father’s house makes a vow to the Lord, or places herself under an obligation, 4 and her father hears of her vow or the obligation she has placed herself under but says nothing to her, then all her vows still stand, and every obligation she has put herself under is binding. 5 But if her father expresses his disapproval on the day he hears it, then none of her vows and none of the obligations she has placed herself under are binding. The Lord will release her, because her father has expressed to her his disapproval.
“If she marries while under her vows or the thoughtless utterance of her lips by which she has bound herself, 7 and her husband hears about it but says nothing to her on the day he learns of it, then her vows still stand, and the obligations she has placed herself under are binding. 8 But if her husband forbids her on the day that he hears about it, he will nullify her vow that is binding or the rash promise by which she obligates herself, and the Lord will release her.
“Any vow taken by a widow or a divorced woman is binding on her.
“If a woman living in her husband’s house makes a vow or an obligation by a pledge under oath, 11 and her husband hears about it but says nothing to her, and does not forbid her, then all her vows will stand, and every pledge by which she has obligated herself is binding. 12 But if her husband nullifies them on the day he hears about them, then nothing that proceeded from her lips concerning her vows or the obligation she pledged herself by will stand. Her husband has nullified them and the Lord will release her. 13 Every vow and every binding oath to deny herself, her husband may confirm it, or her husband may nullify it. 14 But if her husband says nothing at all to her from day to day, then he confirms all her vows or her pledges by which she is obligated. He has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day that he heard of them. 15 But if he nullifies them some time later after he has heard of them, then he will be responsible for her guilt.”
These are the statutes that the Lord commanded Moses concerning the relationship between a husband and his wife, and between a father and his young daughter while she is still living in her father’s house.
