Spiritual Gifts

1
NOW

concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.  2  You know that when you were pagans, you were led astray and enticed after mute idols.  3  Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is cursed,” and no one can say, “ Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

4 There are different gifts, but the same Spirit.  5  There are different ministries, but the same Lord.  6  There are different activities, but it is the same God who works all of them in everyone.

7 To each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  8  To one is given the message of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the message of knowledge by the same Spirit,  9  to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,  10  to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.  11  All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, distributing to each one as He determines.

One Body, Many Parts

12  For as the body is one and has many parts, and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is also with Christ.  13  For we were all baptised by one Spirit into one bodywhether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or freeand we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

14 Now the body is not one part but many.  15  If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.  16  And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body.  17  If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?  18  But now God has arranged the parts in the body, each one of them, just as He wanted.  19  And if they were all the same part, where would the body be?  20  As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.

21  The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” nor can the head say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”  22  On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are necessary,  23  and those parts of the body that we think to be less honourable, we clothe with greater honour. Our unpresentable parts are treated with special modesty,  24  while our presentable parts do not need this. But God has put the body together, and given greater honour to the parts which lack it,  25  so that there may be no division within the body, but the parts would have equal concern for each other.  26  If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honoured, all the parts rejoice with it.

27  Now you are the body of Christ, and each of you is an individual part of it.  28  And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, gifts of healing, helping, administrators, various kinds of tongues.  29  Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all perform miracles?  30  Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?  31  But earnestly desire the greater gifts.

And I will show you a more excellent way.
