John Chapter 13

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

1
IT

was just before the Passover Feast, and Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

2 By the time the evening meal was being served, the Devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus.  3  Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into His hands, and that He had come from God and was returning to God;  4  so He got up from the meal, took off His outer robe, and wrapped a towel around His waist.  5  Then He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to dry them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.

6 He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?”

7 Jesus replied, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but later you will understand.”

8“You will never wash my feet!” Peter said.

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

10  Jesus answered, “A person who has already bathed needs only wash to his feet; then his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.”  11  For He knew who would betray Him; that was why He said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12  When Jesus had finished washing their feet, He put on His robe and returned to His place. Then He said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you?  13  You call me ‘Teacher’, and ‘Lord’, and you are right, for that is what I am.  14  So if I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.  15  I have set you an example, so that you also should do as I have done for you.

16  “I tell you the truth, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.  17  If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

Jesus Foretells His Betrayal

18  “I am not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfil the Scripture, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted up his heel against me’.

19  “I am telling you now before it takes place, so that when it does take place you will believe that I am He.  20  I tell you the truth, whoever receives anyone I send receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

21  When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in spirit and declared, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray Me.”

22  Then the disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom He was speaking.  23  One of His disciples, the one who Jesus loved, was reclining next to Him.  24  Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom He was speaking.

25  So he leaned back against Jesus and asked Him, “Lord who is it?”

26  Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then He dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.  27  Then as soon as Judas took the piece of bread, Satan entered into him.

Jesus said to him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”  28  But no one at the table knew why He had said this to Judas.  29  Some thought that because Judas had the money bag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the Feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

30  As soon as Judas received the piece of bread, he left immediately. And it was night.

The New Commandment

31  When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him.  32  If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him at once.

33  “Children, I am with you only a little while longer. You will seek Me, and as I said to the Jews, so now I also tell you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’.

34  “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.  35  By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

36  Simon Peter asked Him, “Lord, where are You going?”

Jesus answered, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later.”

37  Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow You now? I will lay down my life for You.”

38  Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for Me? I tell you the truth, the rooster will not crow until you have denied Me three times.”
