John Chapter 8

1
BUT

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

The Woman Caught in Adultery

2 At dawn Jesus went to the temple courts again. All the people gathered around Him, and He sat down and began to teach them.  3  The scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been caught in adultery. They made her stand in front of all of the people there,  4  and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery.  5  In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do You say?”  6  This asked this to trap Him, so that they might have a basis to accuse Him.

But Jesus bent down and wrote with His finger on the ground.  7  As they went on questioning Him, He stood up and said to them, “If any one is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”

8 Then He bent down again and continued writing on the ground.  9  But when they heard this, one by one they began leaving, from the oldest down to the youngest, until only Jesus was left there with the woman still standing in front of Him.  10  When Jesus stood up, He asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

11  “No one, Lord,” she answered.

“Neither do I condemn you,” Jesus told her. “Go now, and do not sin any more.”

Jesus the Light of the World

12  When Jesus spoke to the people again, He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

13  Then the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not valid.”

14  Jesus answered, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.  15  You judge by human standards; I judge no one.  16  Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.  17  It is written in your own Law that the testimony of two men is valid.  18  I am one who testifies for Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.”

19  Then they asked Him, “Where is Your Father?

“You know neither Me nor My Father,” Jesus replied. “If You knew Me, you would know My Father also.”  20  He spoke these words by the treasury, while He taught in the temple area. Yet no one laid hands on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

Jesus Foretells His Death

21  Then Jesus told them again, “I am going away, and you will search for Me; but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”

22  At this, the Jews asked, “Will He kill Himself, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”

23  He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.  24  Therefore I told you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am the One I claim to be, you will die in your sins.”

25  “Who are you?” they asked.

“Just what I have been claiming to you from the very beginning,” Jesus replied.  26  “I have many things to say about you and much to judge. But He who sent Me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from Him.”

27  They did not understand that He was speaking to them about the Father.  28  So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the One I claim to be, and that I do nothing on My own. But I speak these things just as the Father has taught me.  29  The One who has sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do what pleases Him.”

Truth and Freedom Through Jesus

30  As He was saying these things, many believed in Him.  31  Then Jesus said to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you really are My disciples.  32  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

33  They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can You say that we will be set free?”

34  Jesus answered them, “I tell you the truth, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.  35  A slave does not remain part of a family forever, but a son belongs to it forever.  36  So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.  37  I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for an opportunity to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.  38  I speak what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

39  “Abraham is our father,” they replied.

“If you were Abraham’s children,” Jesus said, “you would be doing what Abraham did.  40  But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.  41  You are doing the things your own father does.”

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “We have one FatherGod Himself.”

42  Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came from God and now I am here. I didn’t come of My own will, but He sent Me.  43  Why don’t you understand what I say? It is because you are unable to accept My word.  44  You are of your father the Devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.  45  Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.  46  Who among you can prove Me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe Me?  47  Whoever belongs to God listens to the words of God. The reason you do not listen is that you do not belong to God.”

Jesus and Abraham

48  The Jews answered Him, “Are we not right in saying that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?”

49  “I do not have a demon,” Jesus answered. “I honour My Father, and you dishonour Me.  50  Yet I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks it, and He is the judge.  51  I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.”

52  Then the Jews said, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham died, and so did the prophets. Yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste death’.  53  Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died and the prophets also died. Who do You think You are?”

54  Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing. It is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’.  55  Though you do not know Him, I know Him. If I said that I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word.  56  Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see My day; he saw it and was glad.”

57  The Jews replied, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”

58  Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was, I am!”

59  At this, the Jews picked up stones to stone Him with, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple grounds.
