John Chapter 2

Jesus Changes Water into Wine

1
ON

the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.  2  Jesus and His disciples had also been invited to the wedding.  3  When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They don’t have any more wine.”

4 Jesus said to her, “What does your concern have to do with Me, woman? My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”

6 Now there were six stone water jars standing there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them up to the brim.

8 Then He said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” And they did.

9 When the master of the feast tasted the water that had become wine, he did not know where it came from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he said to the bridegroom,  10  “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when the guests have drank freely, then the inferior wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”

11  This, the first of His miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. Thus He revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

12  After this He went down to Capernaum with His mother, His brothers, and His disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.  13  When the time drew near for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.  14  In the temple courts He found people who were selling cattle, sheep, and doves, while others were seated at their table exchanging money.  15  So He made a whip of cords and drove everyone out of the temple, along with their sheep and cattle. Then He tipped out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.  16  He told those who were selling doves, “Take these things away! Stop turning My Father’s house into a marketplace!”

17  Then His disciples remembered that it was written: “Zeal for Your house will consume Me”.

18  The Jews demanded of Him, “What miraculous sign can You perform to prove Your authority to us for doing these things?”

19  Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.”

20  The Jews replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?”

21  But He was speaking of the temple of His body.  22  After He was raised from the dead, His disciple remembered that He had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

23  While Jesus was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people who saw His miraculous signs believed in His name.  24  But He would not entrust Himself to them, for He knew all men,  25  and did not need anyone’s testimony about man, for He knew what was inside man.
