Mark Chapter 9

The Promise of the Kingdom

1
JESUS

said to them, “I tell you the truth: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they have seen the Kingdom of God come with power.”

The Transfiguration

2 After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James and John, and led them up a high mountain, where they were alone. Then He was transfigured before them,  3  and His clothes became radiant and dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them.  4  And there appeared to them Elijah and Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three shelters, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”  6  (Peter did not know what to say, because they were all very frightened.)

7 Then a cloud appeared and overshadowed them, and a voice came from the cloud: This is My beloved Son; listen to Him.”

8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone else with them except Jesus.

9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.  10  So they kept the matter to themselves, discussing with one another what the “rising from the dead” meant.

11  Then they asked Him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

12  Jesus replied, “Elijah truly does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written of the Son of Man that He must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?  13  But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, as it is written of him.”

The Healing of a Boy with an Evil Spirit

14  When they came back to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and some scribes arguing with them.  15  As soon as the crowd of people saw Him, they were greatly amazed and ran to Him and greeted Him.

16  He asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?”

17  A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought my son to You, for he has a spirit that makes him unable to speak.  18  Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.”

19  “O faithless generation,” Jesus replied, “how long am I to be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to Me.”

20  So they brought the boy to Him. When the spirit saw Jesus, immediately it convulsed the boy. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

21  Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has this been happening to him?”

“From childhood,” he said.  22  And many times it has cast him into the fire or into the water to destroy him. But if You are able to do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

23  Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you are able’. All things are possible for him who believes.”

24  Immediately the father of the child cried out, “I do believe! Help my unbelief!”

25  When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly coming together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

26  Then the spirit shrieked, convulsed the boy violently and came out of him. The boy became like someone who was dead, so that many said, “He is dead.”  27  But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

28  After Jesus went into a house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?”

29  He said to them, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

30  They left that place and passed through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know it  31  because He was teaching His disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. Then after He is killed, He will rise again three days later.”  32  But they did not understand what He meant, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.

Who is the Greatest?

33  Then they came to Capernaum. When He was in a house, He asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?”  34  But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest.

35  Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve together and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

36  Then He took a little child and had him stand among them. After taking him in His arms, He said to them,  37  “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in My name welcomes Me, and whoever welcomes Me, does not welcome Me, but Him who sent Me.”

In the Name of the Lord

38  John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.”

39  “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who performs a miracle in My name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me.  40  For whoever is not against us is for us.  41  If anyone gives you a cup of water to drink in My name because you belong to Christ, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.

The Price of Sin

42  “But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a large millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.  43  If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire;  44  where

‘Their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched’.

45  “And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire;  46  where

‘Their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched’.

47  “And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the Kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into Gehenna,  48  where

‘Their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched’.

49  “For everyone will be salted with fire.  50  Salt is good, but if salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
