Mark Chapter 2

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

1
WHEN

Jesus entered Capernaum again after some days, it was reported that He was at home.  2  So many people gathered around that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and He preached the word to them.  3  Then some people came to Him bringing a paralytic, who was carried by four men.  4  Since they could not get near Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above where He was. After they had made an opening, they lowered down the mat on which the paralytic was lying.  5  When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “My son, your sins are forgiven.”

6 But some of the scribes were sitting there, thinking to themselves,  7  “Why does this fellow talk like this? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

8 But Jesus knew in His spirit straight away that they were thinking this in their hearts, and He said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts?  9  Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’, or to say, ‘Get up, take up your mat and walk’?  10  But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He told the paralytic,  11  “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat and go home.”  12  Immediately he stood up, picked up his mat, and walked out in full view of everyone there. They were all amazed and gave glory to God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

The Calling of Matthew Levi

13  Then Jesus went out again beside the sea. A large crowd gathered around Him, and He taught them.  14  As He walked along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth, and Jesus said to him, “Follow Me.” So Levi got up and followed Him.

15  While Jesus was having dinner in Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were also sitting with Jesus and His disciples, for there were many who followed Him.  16  When the scribes of the Pharisees saw Him eating with sinners and tax collectors, they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

17  When Jesus heard this, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a doctor, but those who are sick need one. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Jesus Questioned About Fasting

18  Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

19  Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.  20  But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day.

21  “No one sows a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and the tear is made worse.  22  And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.”

Lord of the Sabbath

23  One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grain fields, and as they made their way, His disciples began to pluck the heads of grain.  24  The Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

25  Jesus said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and needed to eat?  26  In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he went into the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which it is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests. And he also gave some to his companions.”

27  Then He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.  28  Therefore the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
