Mark Chapter 8

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

1
DURING

those days a large crowd had gathered and they had nothing to eat. So Jesus called His disciples to Him and said,  2  “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have already been with Me now for three days and have nothing to eat.  3  If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a long distance.”

4 His disciples answered Him, “Where can anyone get enough bread out here in the wilderness to feed all these people?”

5“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven,” they answered.

6 Then He directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. When He had taken the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke the loaves and gave them to His disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd.  7  They also had a few small fish, and having blessed them, He told them to distribute these also.  8  The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward they collected seven large baskets of leftover pieces.  9  There were about four thousand people present. After He had sent them away,  10  He got into the boat with His disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod

11  The Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus. To test Him, they asked for a sign from heaven.  12  But He sighed deeply in His spirit and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to this generation.”  13  Then He left them, and getting into the boat again, He went across to the other side.

14  The disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they only had one loaf with them in the boat.  15  Then He cautioned them, saying, “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”

16  And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “We have no bread.”  17  And Jesus, being aware of this, said to them, “Why are you still discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened?  18  Do you have eyes, but do not see, and do you have ears, but do not hear? And do you not remember?  19  When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?”

“Twelve,” they replied.

20  “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?”

“Seven,” they answered.

21  Then He said to them, “How is it that you still don’t understand?”

Jesus Heals a Blind Man

22  They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch Him.  23  He took a blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. And when He had put spit on his eyes and laid His hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”

24  He looked up and said, “I see men, but they look like trees walking around.”

25  Once more Jesus laid His hands on the man’s eyes. Then his sight was restored and he saw everything clearly.  26  Jesus sent him home, and told him, “Don’t even go into the village.”

Peter’s Confession of the Christ

27  Then Jesus and His disciples went on to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”

28  They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”

29  “But you,” He asked, “who do you say that I am?”

Peter answered Him, “You are the Christ.”

30  And Jesus strictly warned them not to tell anyone about Him.

Jesus Predicts His Own Death

31  Then He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.  32  He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.

33  But when Jesus turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuke Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

The Price of Discipleship

34  Then He called the crowd to Himself along with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.  35  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and for the sake of the gospel will save it.  36  For what benefit is there for a man if he gains the whole world, yet loses his own life?  37  Or what can a man give in exchange for his life?  38  For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man will also be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

9:1 And He said to them, “I tell you the truth, that there are some standing here who will not taste death until they have seen the Kingdom of God come with power.”
