Mark Chapter 4

The Man with the Shriveled Hand

1
JESUS

entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a shriveled hand.  2  Some of them were looking for an opportunity to accuse Jesus, so they watched Him closely to see whether He would heal him on the Sabbath.  3  Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand here before us.”

4 Then Jesus asked them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to kill?” But they remained silent.

5 He looked around at them with anger, grieved at the hardness of their hearts. Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored whole.  6  Then the Pharisees went out, and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against Jesus, how they might destroy Him.

Ministering to the Multitude

7 Jesus departed with His disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed Him.  8  When they heard about all He was doing, many people came to Him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon.  9  Jesus told His disciples to have a boat ready for Him, so the crowds would not crush Him.  10  For He had healed many, so that all who had diseases were pressing forward and trying to touch Him.  11  Whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they fell down before Him and shouted, “You are the Son of God!”  12  But He sternly ordered them not to make Him known.

Jesus Appoints the Twelve

13  Jesus went up on a mountain and called to Him those whom He wanted, and they came to Him.  14  Then He appointed twelvewhom He also named apostlesto be with Him and that He might send them out to preach,  15  and to have authority to cast out demons.  16  He appointed the Twelve: Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter);  17  to James son of Zebedee, and to his brother John, Jesus gave the name “Boanerges”; (that is, ‘Sons of Thunder’);  18  Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananaean,  19  and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.

A House Divided

20  Then they entered a house, and a crowd gathered again, so that they were not even able to eat.  21  When his family heard about this, they set out to restrain him, for they said, “He is out of His mind.”

22  And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebub! By the prince of demons He casts out demons.”

23  So Jesus called them to Himself and spoke to them in parables: “How can Satan cast out Satan?  24  If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.  25  If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.  26  And if Satan has rebelled against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come.  27  No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he can plunder the house.

28  “I tell you the truth, all sins will be forgiven people and whatever blasphemies they utter.  29  But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness; they are guilty of an eternal sin”  30  for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”

Jesus’ True Family

31  Then His brothers and His mother arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to ask Him to go to them.  32  A crowd was sitting around Him; and they told Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are outside, asking for You.”

33  He replied to them, “Who are My mother and My brothers?”

34  And looking at those who were seated around Him, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!  35  Whoever does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.”
