Zechariah Chapter 12

The Coming Deliverance of Judah

1
THIS

is the word of the Lord concerning Israel. The Lord, who stretched out the heavens, who laid the foundation of the earth, and who formed the spirit of man within him, declares:  2  “Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering for all the surrounding peoples. Judah will be besieged also, along with Jerusalem.  3  On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy rock for all the peoples; all who try to lift that rock will be severely injured, and all the nations of the earth will come together against her.  4  On that day,” declares the Lord, “I will strike every horse with panic and its rider with madness. I will keep a watchful eye over the house of Judah, but I will strike all the horses of the nations with blindness.  5  Then each of the leaders of Judah will say in their hearts, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my strength through the Lord of Hosts, their God’.

6   “On that day I will make the leaders of Judah like a firepot in a woodpile, like a flaming torch among sheaves. They will consume to the right and left all the surrounding peoples, while Jerusalem continues to be inhabited in her own placeJerusalem.

7   “The Lord will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of Jerusalem’s inhabitants may not be greater than that of Judah.  8  On that day the Lord will shield the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them will be like David on that day, and the house of David will be like God, like the Angel of the Lord going before them.  9  On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

Mourning for the One They Pierced

10  “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. Then they will look on Me, whom they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.  11  On that day there will be a great weeping in Jerusalem, like the weeping of Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.  12  The land will mourn, every clan by itself: the clan of David by itself and their wives by themselves; the clan of the house of Nathan by itself and their wives by themselves;  13  the clan of the house of Levi by itself and their wives by themselves; the clan of Shimei by itself and their wives by themselves;  14  and all the remaining clans, every clan by itself, and their wives by themselves.
