Romans Chapter 8

Life Through the Spirit

1
THEREFORE,

there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.  2  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.  3  For what the law could not do since it was made weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own son in the likeness of sinful man to be an offering for sin. So He condemned sin in the flesh,  4  In order that the righteous requirement of the law might be met in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

5 For those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.  6  The mind that is set on the flesh comes to death, but to the mind that is controlled by the Spirit comes life and peace.  7  For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, because it does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so.  8  Those whose lives are based on the flesh cannot please God.

9 You, however, are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God lives in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.  10  But if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.  11  And is the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who lives in you.

12  Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation, although not to the flesh to live according to the flesh,  13  for if you live according to the flesh, you will die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live,  14  because all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.  15  For you do not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!”  16  The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children,  17  and if children, then heirsheirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings so that we may also be glorified with Him.

From Suffering to Glory

18  I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.  19  For the creation waits in eager anticipation for the sons of God to be revealed.  20  For the creation was subjected to futility, not by its own choice, but by the will of Him who subjected it, in hope  21  that the creation itself will also be set free from its bondage to decay and be brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.

22  We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth until now,  23  and not only the creation, but we ourselves who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we groan inwardly as we eagerly await adoption, the redemption of our bodies.  24  For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is not hope, for who hopes for he already sees?  25  But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it patiently.

26  In the same way, the Spirit also helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what we should pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings that cannot be spoken.  27  And He who searches the hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

God’s Love in Christ Jesus

28  We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who has been called according to His purpose.  29  For those whom God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brothers.  30  And those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified; and those whom He justified, He also glorified.

31  What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?  32  He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us allhow will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things?  33  Who can bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.  34  Who is he that condemns? It is Christ Jesus who died, but even more than that, has been raised to life; He is at the right hand of God and is also making intercession for us.  35  Who shall separate us from the life of Christ? Shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?  36  As it is written:

“For Your sake we are being put to death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered”.

37  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.  38  For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,  39  nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
