The Book of Matthew

Matthew Chapter 9

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

1
JESUS

got into a boat, crossed over the sea, and went to His own town.  2  Some men brought to Him a paralyzed man lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”

3 At this, some of the scribes said among themselves, “This man is blaspheming!”

4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?  5  For which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven’, or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?  6  But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”He said to the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your mat, and go to your home.”  7  And he stood up and went home.

8 When the crowds saw this, they were filled with awe, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

The Call of Matthew

9 As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow Me,” He said to him. So he got up and followed Him.

10  As Jesus sat having dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with Him and His disciples.  11  When the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

12  But when Jesus heard this, He said, “Those who are well have no need of a doctor, but those who are sick.  13  Go and learn what this means ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice’. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Jesus Questioned About Fasting

14  Then the disciples of John came to Him and asked, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

15  Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

16  “No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse.  17  Neither is new wine put into old wineskins, or else the wineskins burst, and the wine is spilled and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed

18  While He was saying these things to them, suddenly a certain ruler came and knelt before Him and said, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”  19  So Jesus got up and followed him, and so did His disciples.

20  Just then a woman who had been suffering from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak,  21  for she said to herself, “If I can just touch His cloak, I will be made well.”

22  But Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter, He said, “your faith has made you well.” And the woman was healed from that moment.

23  When Jesus came to the ruler’s house, He saw the flute players and a crowd lamenting loudly.  24  He said to them, “Go away, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” But they laughed at Him.  25  When the crowd had been put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up.  26  And the report of this spread through that whole region.

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

27  As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”

28  When He entered the house, the blind men came to Him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

“Yes, Lord,” they replied.

29  Then He touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you.”  30  And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus warned them sternly, “See that on one knows about this.”  31  But they went and spread the news about Him throughout all that district.

Speech is Restored

32  While they were leaving, a man who was demon-possessed and unable to speak was brought to Him.  33  And when the demon had been driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowds were amazed and said, “Never before has anything like this seen in Israel!”

34  But the Pharisees said, “He drives out demons by the prince of the demons.”

The Lord of the Harvest

35  Then Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and every sickness.

36  When He saw the crowds, He had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.  37  Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.  38  Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”
