six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared before them, talking with Jesus.
Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will make three shelters here, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!”
When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground and were terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, and said, “Get up; don’t be afraid.” 8 When they looked up, they saw no one but Jesus only.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone about the vision, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
The disciples asked Him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
Jesus replied, “Elijah is coming and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that He was speaking to them about John the Baptist.
When they came to the crowd, a man approached and knelt down before Jesus. 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said, “for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire and or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”
Jesus replied, “O unbelieving and perverse generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I bear with you? Bring the boy here to Me.” 18 Then Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed from that moment.
The disciples came to Jesus privately and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
He replied, “Because of your little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. 21 However this kind will not come out except by prayer and fasting.”
When they came together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men. 23 They will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised.” And the disciples were filled with grief.
After Jesus and His disciples had arrived at Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and said, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”
“Yes, He does,” Peter answered.
When Peter went into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, “What do you think, Simon?” He asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect tariffs or taxes? From their own sons or from others?”
“From others,” Peter answered.
“Then the sons are free,” Jesus said. 27 “However, so that we may not offend them, go to the sea and cast in a hook. Take the first fish you catch, and when you open its mouth you will find a coin. Take it and give it to them for Me and for yourself.”
