James Chapter 5

Warning to Rich Oppressors

1
COME

now, you rich people! Weep and wail for the miseries that are coming on you.  2  Your wealth is corrupted, and your clothes are moth-eaten.  3  Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.  4  Look! The wages that you withheld from the workers who mowed your fields cry out against you, and the outcry of the harvesters has reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.  5  You have lived on earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter.  6  You have condemned and you have murdered the righteous man, and he did not resist you.

Be Patient and Persevering

7 Therefore be patient, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth and is patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains.  8  You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.  9  Do not grumble against each other, brothers, so that you will not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!

10  Brothers, as an example of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.  11  Indeed, we consider them blessed who have endured. You have heard of Job’s endurance and have seen the outcome that the Lord finally brought about, how the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.

12  Above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. Let your “Yes” be yes, and your “No” be no, or you will fall under condemnation.

The Prayer of Faith

13  Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing songs of praise.  14  Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they should pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.  15  The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.  16  Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for each other, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous man is powerful and effective.

17  Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain. Then no rain fell on the land for three years and six months.  18  Then he prayed again, and the heavens gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest.

19  My brothers, if anyone from among you should wander from the truth, and someone turns him back,  20  he should know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
