The Book of 1 Peter

1 Peter Chapter 5

Tending the Flock of God

1
I

appeal to the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ and a participant in the glory to be revealed:  2  Shepherd God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers, not out of compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it; not greedy for money but eagerly;  3  not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.  4  And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to your elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble”.

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, so that He may exalt you in due time.  7  Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

8 Be self-controlled; be alert. Your adversary the Devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.  9  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are being experienced by your brothers throughout the world.

10  And the God of grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered for a little while, will Himself restore and establish you, strengthened and steadfast.  11  To Him be the power forever and ever. Amen.

Final Greetings

12  With the help of Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, I have written you this brief letter to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God in which you stand.

13  She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son.  14  Greet one another with a kiss of love.

Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
