The Book of 1 Timothy

1 Timothy Chapter 4

The Great Apostasy

1
NOW

the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and things taught by demons.  2  Such teachings come through the hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.  3  They forbid marriage and demand abstinence from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.  4  For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,  5  since it is sanctified by the word of God and by prayer.

A Good Servant of Jesus Christ

6 If you point out these things to the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the good teaching which you have carefully followed.  7  But have nothing to do with profane myths and old wives’ tales. Rather, train yourself up in godliness,  8  for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance.  10  For to this end we labour and strive because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, especially of those who believe.

Instructions for Ministry

11  Command and teach these things.  12  Let no one despise your youth, but set an example to the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.  13  Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, and to teaching.  14  Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders.

15  Be diligent in these things; give yourself entirely to them, so that your progress may be evident to all.  16  Pay close attention to yourself and to the doctrine. Persevere in these things, or by doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers.
