this, the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them on ahead of Him, two by two, to every town and place where He Himself was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest. 3 Go on your way. Look, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not carry a purse, or bag, or sandals; and do not greet anyone along the road.
“Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’ 6 If a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserve his wages. Do not move around from house to house.
“Whenever you enter a town and the people there welcome you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God has come near to you’. 10 But whenever you enter a town and the people there do not welcome you, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Yet know this for certain: The Kingdom of God has come near’. 12 I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that town.
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades.
“He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”
The seventy returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”
Jesus replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
In that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and the learned and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was Your gracious will.
“All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.”
Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”
Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,“ he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
“What is written in the Law?” Jesus asked. “How do you read it?”
He answered: “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your soul, and with all your mind’; and ‘your neighbour as yourself’.”
“You have answered correctly,” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live.”
But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”
Jesus said in reply: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothing, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came to where the man was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion. 34 He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, and he poured on oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him, and when I come back I will reimburse you for any additional expenses you may have’.
“Which of these three do you think was neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”
The expert in the law replied, “The one who showed mercy to him.”
Then Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
While they were on their way, Jesus entered a village, where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what He was saying. 40 But Martha was distracted with all the serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me.”
But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
