full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days He was tempted by the Devil. He ate nothing in those days, and when they were over, He was hungry.
3 The Devil said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
4 But Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone’.”
5 Then the Devil took Him up on a high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And he said to Jesus, “I will give You all their splendour and this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you then, will worship me, it will all be Yours.”
8 Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.”
9 Then the Devil took Him to Jerusalem, and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written,
‘He will command His angels concerning You,
to protect You’;
11 ‘they will lift you up with their hands,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone’.”
12 Jesus answered him, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test’.”
13 When the Devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.
14 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news about Him spread throughout all the surrounding countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised Him.
16 Jesus went to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was His custom. And He stood up to read. 17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. He unrolled the scroll, and found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because He has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor
He has sent me to proclaim freedom to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set free the oppressed,
19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”
20 Then He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him, 21 and He began by saying to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
22 All spoke well of Him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from His mouth. They asked, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”
23 Jesus said to them, “Doubtless you will quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician heal yourself! What we have heard you did in Capernaum, do here also in your own hometown’.”
24 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus continued, “no prophet is accepted in his own hometown. 25 But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months and a severe famine came over the whole land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow at Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”
28 When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was furious. 29 They got up, thrust Him out of the town, and took Him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, intending to throw Him over the cliff. 30 But He passed right through the midst of the crowd and went on His way.
31 From there Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and He was teaching the people on the Sabbath. 32 And they were amazed at His teaching, because His message had authority.
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by an unclean spirit, a demon. He cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Leave us alone! What have You to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all, and came out of him without injuring him.
36 All the people were amazed and kept saying to one another, “What is this teaching? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region.
38 Jesus left the synagogue and He went to Simon’s house. But Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they appealed to Jesus to help her. 39 So He bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Then she got up straight away and began to serve them.
40 When the sun was setting, all the people brought to Jesus anyone who was sick with various diseases, and He laid His hands on each one of them and healed them. 41 Also, demons came out of many people, shouting and saying, “You are the Son of God!” But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that He was the Christ.
42 At daybreak Jesus went out and made His way to a solitary place. But the crowds were searching for Him, and when they found Him, they tried to keep Him from leaving them. 43 But He said to them, “I must preach the good news of the Kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And He continued preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
