little children, I write these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have One who speaks in our defence to the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only ours, but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 By this we may be sure that we have come to know Him: if we obey His commands. 4 The man who says, “I have come to know Him,” yet does not obey His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever obeys His word, truly in this person the love of God has been made complete. This is how we know we are in Him: 6 Whoever claims to abide in Him should also walk as Jesus walked.
7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command, but an old command that you have had from the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing to a new command that is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.
9 Anyone who claims that he is in the light but he hates his brother, is still in the darkness until now. 10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in darkness; he does not know which way to go, because the darkness has blinded his eyes
12 I am writing to you, little children,
because your sins have been forgiven on account of His name.
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you have come to know Him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the Evil One.
I have written to you, children,
because you have come to know the Father.
14 I have written to you, fathers,
because you have come to know Him who is from the beginning.
I have written to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the Word of God lives in you;
and you have had victory over the Evil One.
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For everything that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the arrogant boasting of all he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 And the world with its unrighteous desires is passing away, but those who do the will of God will live forever.
18 Children, it is the last hour. And as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. From this we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But by going out they made it plain that none of them belongs to us.
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you have knowledge. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; he who confesses the Son has the Father also.
24 Be careful that what you heard from the beginning remains in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that He promised to us: eternal life.
26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about all things and is authentic and is not a lie; just as He has taught you, remain in Him.
28 And now, little children, continue in Him, so that when He appears we may be confident and not put to shame before Him at His coming.
29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of Him.
