Colossians Chapter 4

The New Life in Christ

1
SINCE

you have been raised with Christ, seek those things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.  2  Set your minds on things above, not on things that are on the earth.  3  For you have died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.  4  When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you will also appear with Him in glory.

5 Therefore, put to death whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greedwhich is idolatry.  6  Because of these, God’s wrath is coming on the sons of disobedience,  7  and you once walked in those ways when you were living that life.  8  But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth.  9  Do not lie to one another, since you have put off your old self with its practices  10  and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator.  11  In that renewal there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all, and is in all.

The Christian Life

12  Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,  13  bearing one another and for giving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.  14  Above all these virtues, put on love, which binds them all together in perfect harmony.

15  And let the peace of the Christ rule in your hearts, to which you were called to be members of the one body; and be thankful.  16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another all wisdom, and with gratitude in your hearts as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.  17  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

The Christian Home

18  Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

19  Husbands, love your wives and do not treat them harshly.

20  Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

21  Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

22  Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything, not only while their eye is on you, and in order to please them, but in sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.  23  Whatever you do, do it with all your heart, as though being done for the Lord and not for men,  24  since you know that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord; for you serve the Lord Christ.  25  For the wrongdoer will be paid back for whatever wrong he has done, and there is no favouritism.
