the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly there came a sound like a violent rushing wind from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each one of them. 4 and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 When this sound happened, a crowd came together and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 They were all amazed and astonished, saying “Look, aren’t these all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that we all hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the magnificent acts of God in our own languages.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, and were asking one another, “What does this mean?”
13 But others sneered and said, “They are full of new wine.”
14 But Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and listen carefully to what I say. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
17 ‘It will be in the last days, says God,
that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on My servants, both men and women,
I will pour out My Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above,
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness,
and the moon to blood,
before the coming of the great and awesome Day of the Lord.
21 Then anyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved’.
22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus of Nazareth was a man made known to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through Him, as you yourselves know. 23 Though He was delivered up according to God’s determined purpose and foreknowledge, you crucified and killed Him by the hands of lawless men. 24 But God raised Him up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it. 25 For David says of Him:
‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because He is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad, and my tongue rejoices;
my flesh also will rest in hope,
27 for You will not abandon my soul in the grave,
or allow Your Holy One to see decay.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
You will fill me with joy in Your presence’.
29 “Brothers, I can say to you confidently about the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that He would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing this in advance, he said of the resurrection of the Christ:
‘He was not abandoned to the grave,
and His flesh did not see decay’.
32 “God has raised up this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of this. 33 Therefore, since He has been exalted to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, and He has poured out this that you are seeing and hearing.
34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit in My right hand
35 until I make Your enemies
Your footstool”.’
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what must we do?”
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptised, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
40 With many other words he testified and pleaded with them, saying, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation!” 41 Then those who accepted his message were baptised, and that day about three thousand people were added to their number.
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, and to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Then fear came over everyone, and many wonders and miraculous signs were being done through the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and had everything in common. 45 So they sold their possessions and goods and distributed the proceeds to all, as anyone had need.
46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favour with all the people. The Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
