Habakkuk Chapter 4

Habakkuk’s Prayer

1
A

prayer of Habakkuk the prophet. According to Shigionoth.

2 O Lord, I have heard of Your renown;
I stand in awe of Your deeds, O Lord. Revive Your works in our own time;
make them known in these years; In Your wrath, remember mercy.

3 God comes from Teman,
the Holy One from Mount Paran.   Selah His glory covers the heavens,
and the earth is filled with His praise. 4 His brilliance is like the sunrise;
rays flash forth from His hand from where His power is hidden. 5 Before Him goes plague,
and pestilence follows in His steps. 6 He stands and surveys the earth;
He looks on, and the nations tremble. The ancient mountains are shattered,
and the ageold hills collapse. His ways are eternal. 7 I see the tents of Cushan in distress;
the tent curtains of the land of Midian are trembling.

8 Are You angry with the rivers, O Lord?
Is Your wrath directed against the rivers, or Your rage against the seas
when You ride on Your horses, and Your victorious chariots? 9 You uncovered Your bow;
You made ready the arrows of the oath.   Selah You split the earth with rivers.
10The mountains see You and writhe. Torrents of water sweep by;
the deep roars and raises its waves high.

11 Sun and moon stand still in their lofty places,
at the flash of Your flying arrows, at the flashing of Your shining spear. 12 You stride through the earth in fury;
You trample down the nations in anger. 13 You come forth for the deliverance of Your people,
to save Your anointed. You crush the leader of the house of the wicked,
and strip him bare from foot to neck.   Selah 14 With his own arrows You pierce the heads of his warriors,
who come out like whirlwind to scatter, gloating as though about
to uncover the weak and devour them. 15 You trample the sea with Your horses,
churning the mighty waters.

A Hymn of Confident Faith

16 When I heard, I trembled within,
and my lips quivered at the sound; decay entered my bones,
and my legs were shaking. Yet I must wait quietly for the day of distress
to come upon the nation invading us. 17 Though the fig tree does not bud,
and no grapes are on the vines; though the olive crop fails,
and the fields produce no food; though there are no sheep in the pens,
and no cattle in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord;
I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!

19 God the Lord is my strength;
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer, and He enables me to walk on the mountain heights.

To the director of music: On my stringed instruments.
