The Book of Jonah

Jonah Chapter 4

Jonah Goes to Nineveh

1
THEN

the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time:  2  “Get up, go to the great city of Ninevah, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.”  3  So Jonah set out to go to Ninevah, in accordance with the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an extremely large city, a three-day journey.  4  On the first day, Jonah walked through the city proclaiming: “Forty days more, and Nineveh will be overthrown.”  5  The people of Nineveh believed God, and they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least.

The People of Nineveh Repent

6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his royal robes, and he covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes.  7  Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh:

“By the decree of the king and his nobles:

“No man or animal, herd or flock, is to taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water.  8  Furthermore, let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and everyone must call out earnestly to God. Let everyone turn from his evil ways and from the violence that is on his hands.  9  Who knows? God may yet turn and relent; He may turn away from His fierce anger so that we will not perish.”

10  When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, God relented from the disaster that He said He was going to bring upon them, and He did not do it.
