that same year, early in the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who was from Gibeon, spoke to me in the House of the Lord in the presence of the priests and all the people. 2 He said, “This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I have broken the yolk of the king of Babylon. 3 Within two years I will bring back to this place all the articles of the Lord’s temple, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried off to Babylon. 4 I will also bring back to this place Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, along with all the captives of Judah who went to Babylon, declares the Lord, for I will break the yolk of the king of Babylon.”
Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the House of the Lord. 6 The prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the Lord do so! May the Lord fulfil your words which you have prophesied by bringing back the articles of the Lord’s temple and all the people carried away into exile, from Babylon to this place.
“Nevertheless, listen to this word that I will speak in your hearing, and in the hearing of all the people: 8 The prophets who came before you and before me, from ancient times prophesied war and disaster and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. 9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace, only when the word of the prophet is fulfilled will that prophet be recognized as one whom the Lord has truly sent.”
Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it. 11 And Hananiah proclaimed in the presence of all the people: “This is what the Lord says: In the same way I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations within two years.” At this, the prophet Jeremiah went on his way.
Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah. 13 He said, “Go and tell Hananiah, ‘This is what the Lord says: “You have broken a wooden yoke, but in its place you will get a yoke of iron”. 14 For this is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations to make them serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I have even given him the wild animals also” ’.”
Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah! The Lord has not sent you, but you have made this people to trust in a lie. 16 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: ‘Behold, I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. This year you are going to die, because you have spoken rebellion against the Lord’.”
In the seventh month of that same year, the prophet Hananiah died.
