the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed. 2 Then I put my brother Hanani in charge over Jerusalem, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity who feared God more than most. 3 I said to them, “Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are standing guard, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem to keep watch, some at their posts and some in front of their own homes.”
4 Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses were not yet rebuilt.
5 My God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be registered by families. I found the genealogical records of those who came back first, and I found written in it the following:
6 These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles deported by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town, in company with, 7 Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah.

By the seventh month all of the Israelites had settled in their own towns.
