the heavens and the earth and were completed in all their vast array.
2 By the seventh day God completed all His work that He had been doing; so He rested on the seventh day from all the work that He had done. 3 God blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy, because on it He rested from His work of Creation that He had done.
4 This is the account of the heavens and of the earth when they were created. When the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5 and before any shrub of the field had yet grown on the land, and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not yet sent rain to fall on the earth, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 but streams would rise up from the ground and water the whole surface of the land. 7 Then the Lord God formed the man out the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
8 Now the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there He placed the man whom He had formed. 9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees to grow out of the ground that were pleasing in appearance and good for food. The tree of life was also in the middle of the garden, as well as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided and became the source of four rivers. 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it winds around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 The gold of that land is good, and bdellium and onyx stone are also there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it winds around the entire land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is Tigris; it flows along the east side of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and care for it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden, 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it you will surely die.”
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who will be compatible with him.”
19 Now the Lord God had formed from the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought each of them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to all the beasts of the field; but for the man no suitable helper.
21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and he slept. Then God took one of his ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made the rib He had taken into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
23 And the man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman’,
for she was taken from man.”
24 This is why a man leaves his father and mother to be bonded with his wife, and they become one flesh.
25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
